It is not known whether Tim Sweeney's efforts influenced this, but Apple unexpectedly made a statement that it is cutting App Store commissions in half for the next year. But only beginners or completely new developers will be able to get such a generous offer. Cupertinos have launched a new system of commission fees, which will reduce them for individual programmers and companies to 15% instead of the usual 30. To receive such a generous offer, programmers only need to register in a special form.
Apple talked about changes coming to the App Store back in November, but no one expected them to come so soon. Now, all developers whose App Store revenues are less than $ 1,000,000 per year (both in-app sales and in-app purchases are counted) can get a fee reduction of up to 15% for the entire 2021. Recall that Apple's standard developer rate is 30%.
The company itself never publishes developer earnings on its store, but analysts estimate that the App Store grossed more than $ 50 billion in 2019 last year. At the same time, 98% of developers together earned only 5% of this amount, the rest falls on several IT giants, including Apple itself.
App Store
The updated FAQ for the store says the following:
Developers who earned less than $ 1 million in the App Store in 2020, as well as young programmers and companies working with Apple for the first time, have a chance of lowering their fees.
If the current participant of the promotion earns more than 1 million, the rate will again increase to the standard 30% and will remain so until the end of the year.
If the developer's sales fall back to less than a million, then he can re-receive 15% commission next year.
All associated app creator accounts must be listed on the registration form in order for the company to determine their eligibility for the discount.
You can apply for participation in the program until December 18 of the current year, and the new commission (if approved) will take effect from January 1 next. If developers submit their applications after 12/18/2020, they will have to wait 15 days for their application to be reviewed.
The best part about this promotion is that even if you are not yet making any App Store revenue and are just in the development phase, you can still sign up for the promotion and receive a 15% commission when your app hits the store.
